Male Waxing QA

Men have a zillion questions about the genital area; they may be tempted to be waxed as their partners have been doing it since the 90’s. Men are catching up and quickly!

The popular area in male waxing is the Male Brazilian

A standard Male Brazilian includes the frontal pubic area (the mound), about 2 inches where the upper thigh meets the pubic area; the shaft, scrotum and inside the glutes. It is optional to leave a landing strip (patch of hair) above the shaft, which is referred to as the male Hollywood wax.

The short answer is “yes”. The long answer is that it has its painful moments but not nearly as painful as you think. It’s a quick pain and generally does not linger. The first wax is the most uncomfortable because you are a “newbie”, your hair and skin is not used to the procedure. I always tell my clients to at least try it twice and then make a decision, if they want to continue on a regular basis—-the second time is much better!

Some clients have found it helpful to take 2 Tylenol before the service.

What that means is that sometimes, especially during the first wax, you may experience some irritation. These can be small bruises; a miniscule drop of blood from the pores when the hair is first pulled out which subsides right away; redness in the area. The scrotum is a delicate area to be waxed first time as well. We use a quality French hard wax on the scrotum and I try to get every single hair. However, if your scrotum starts to look as if it is breaking down we will stop. We would rather leave a couple of hairs than remove skin and usually by the second or third time it is not a problem.

If you shave, we prefer ¼ to ½ inch re-growth. It takes the average person 2 to 3 weeks to grow to ¼ to 1/2 inch length.

If you have never shaved before you can trim to 1/2 inch BUT don’t over trim.

We prefer to trim the area ourselves, we know you may be a regular trimmer, please try not to trim before your appointment, the longer the better!

Your first wax will grow faster than future waxes and you will possibly notice re-growth in 10 days. By the third regular wax (done every 4-6 weeks) you will notice that your hair is finer and not as dense and you will feel less discomfort. The re-growth will be slowed and you will notice that it can take from 3 to 6 weeks to come back.

We have male Brazilian clients that range from 18 to 70 years old. Some are truck drivers, students, professionals, athletes…you name it. Men usually wax because their partners like the look and feel. Body parts not covered in hair are much more sensitive to the touch. It is easier; you feel cleaner and yes, you may even look bigger.

Men also wax because it is a major hygienic difference, especially if you have thick hair. Waxing can honestly change the way you feel about yourself. We have men come in for every reason you can think of, thick hair, sweating too much, ingrown hairs from shaving, surgeries, cleanliness, new body image or simplifying your grooming regimen.

You know it happens; it’s an adrenal response from the body, not a sexual one. No need to be embarrassed. As long as we mutually respect each other, there is no problem.

99.9% of our clients would never think to ask that question, but just in case that .1% needs clarification we will answer it. In our spa waxing is not a sexual experience, it’s a clinical one. We are performing a procedure and trying to do the best job possible for you. Please don’t disrespect us by flirting with us or making suggestive comments. If that is what you are after we are not the waxers for you…and it is your loss because… we are one of the best male waxing spas in St. Louis.

Please do not ask any Esthetician out on a date here at We Wax That! Spa. We are kind because we are in service to our clients with a positive approach to help ease this not so easy service you are receiving, and no other reason than that. We do not date clients. Thank you!

We do not perform sugar waxing.

We find sugar waxing less effective than our custom made wax, which is a variety of soft and hard wax.

Soft wax is more adhesive which pulls the hair from the follicle more efficiently. The hard wax is used on delicate tissue or sensitive areas of the body.

We find this method to be the most effective protocol to wax. Our technique is used in this practice to ensure hair never breaks off and each bulb of hair is pulled from the follicle correctly. We determine what wax to use based on your hair and skin type during your waxing session.

  • Length of hair must to be at least ¼ inch long.
  • No shaving for at least 2-3 weeks.
  • It is recommended to take a hot shower before your waxing appointment.
  • Don’t use any lotions or creams in the area to be waxed.
  • A pain reliever/anti-inflammatory, not aspirin, can be taken 30 minutes prior to your appointment.
  • Don’t use a topical numbing gel they can interfere to get the best waxing results.
  • Let us know if you have been on any skin medications that could affect your waxing service.  These include acne medications such as Accutane, Alpha or Beta Hydroxy Acids, Antibiotics, Benzoyl Peroxide, Differin, Retin-A/Retinol or any other skin thinning medication.
  • Reduce intake of caffeine day of your appointment as it can stimulate the nervous system, making you more sensitive to waxing.
  • Avoid spray tanning, sun bathing, and tanning bed within 24 hours of waxing, before or after.

After your treatment the skin may feel and look a little sore. If you are going on a vacation it is best to be waxed at least four days before you go. Sweating may cause the hair follicles to become infected (Folliculitus), so you are advise to avoid the following:

  • Avoid exercise, hot bath/shower, sauna, steam, hot tub, pools and beaches 24 hours after waxing. Sweating can carry bacteria into the pores and can irritate the skin after waxing.
  • Use Aquafor, aloe vera gel, antibiotic ointment, antifungal or hydrocortisone cream if necessary.
  • Avoid tight clothing after waxing, especially in the waxed areas. Tight clothing may result in irritation and ingrown hairs.
  • Daily exfoliation is recommended to prevent ingrowns.
